Imari porcelain plate, decorated with different motifs in red, blue and green tones.
Imari porcelain is the western name given to porcelain products made in the town of Arita, Saga Prefecture, Japan. The name “Imari” refers to the neighboring city of Imari, where such products are exported abroad through its port. The official name in Japanese is Arita-yaki and it has its origins in the 17th century.
Imari porcelain designs were decisive in the process of orientalization of European ceramics, in the porcelain production centers of Meissen and Vincennes. Also the production style of Imari porcelain was imitated in Europe, through the faience produced in Delft, the Netherlands and at Robert Chamberlain’s factory in Worcester, England in the 19th century.
