Antique engraving of the disappeared Buen Retiro Palace in Madrid and its gardens, the work of Allain Manesson Mallet (1630-1706), and was published in 1685 in the German edition of the work “Descriptio de l’Univers”, a capital publication of Mallet and which went through various editions and translations.

The engraving shows the Palacio del Buen Retiro in Madrid, which was a large architectural complex built between 1630 and 1640 by order of Felipe IV, the gardens that can be seen were built at the same time as the palace.
In its upper part, the large pond is the scene of naumaquias (staged naval battles) and aquatic shows. In the lower part you can see the equestrian statue of Felipe IV, which is currently installed in the Plaza de Oriente.
