Illuminated Engraving: “The great desolation reaches Cologne due to the great ice of the Rhine”.
Representation of the deplorable state to which the city of Cologne was reduced in February 1784, when the ice broke on the Rhine. Due to this terrible event, the city walls collapsed in several places due to the great force of the waters, which penetrated the city and rose in some neighborhoods to a height of 6 feet and more.
