At the time of the Kangxi Emperor (1661 – 1722), at the beginning of the Qing dynasty, cobalt blue was being increasingly refined to remove manganese impurities; thereafter it reached the pinnacle of its quality, which has been called “blue sapphire”, a perfect clarity. The use of various shades of blue reinforced the delicacy of these pieces.
